US fitness club to open 500 gyms in China by 2020
ANYTIME Fitness has taken an aggressive approach in entering the Chinese market. The American 24-hour fitness club this week announced plans to open 500 gyms around the country by 2020.
Anytime Fitness has over 3,500 franchises around the world, but only 170 of them are in Asia. Its gym facilities are open 24 hours for club members throughout the year. Currently, it has two experimental gyms in Shanghai. Officials from the club said in Shanghai that adjustments would be made in space setting and facility arrangement for future franchises to meet the Chinese customers’ need.
“Our challenge is not the competition against other fitness brands in China, but to attract more people to gyms and change their lifestyle,” said Maurice Levine, Anytime Fitness’ CEO in Asia. Company president Dave Mortensen said China is the company’s second largest target market after the US.
A monthly membership is expected to cost around 400 yuan (US$59), which would give members access to any franchise around the world.
