United great Law reveals mixed dementia diagnosis

Former Manchester United striker Denis Law said yesterday he has been diagnosed with two types of dementia.

The 81-year-old Law, whose 237 goals for United are bettered only by Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney, said he wanted to be open about his condition after revealing he has 鈥渕ixed dementia鈥 鈥 Alzheimer鈥檚 and vascular dementia.

鈥淭his has been an extremely difficult year for everyone and the long periods of isolation have certainly not helped,鈥 said Law, who played for United from 1962-73 and won the Ballon d鈥橭r in 1964. Law, nicknamed 鈥楾he King,鈥 ended his career with a second spell at Manchester City.

鈥淚t is an incredibly challenging and problematic disease and I have witnessed many friends go through this,鈥 he continued. 鈥淵ou hope that it won鈥檛 happen to you, even make jokes about it whilst ignoring the early signs because you don鈥檛 want it to be true. You get angry, frustrated, confused and then worried, worried for your family, as they will be the ones dealing with it.鈥

Law said he hopes to continue going to Old Trafford to watch United play but will be 鈥渁djusting my lifestyle accordingly.鈥

鈥淭he time has come to tackle this head on, excuse the pun,鈥 Law said in a statement on United鈥檚 website.

鈥淚 recognize how my brain is deteriorating and how my memory evades me when I don鈥檛 want it to and how this causes me distress in situations that are beyond my control.

鈥淚 do understand what is happening and that is why I want to address my situation now whilst I am able, because I know there will be days when I don鈥檛 understand and I hate the thought of that right now.鈥

Law鈥檚 30 goals for Scotland is matched only by Kenny Dalglish, though Law鈥檚 tally was achieved in almost 50 games fewer.

He also played club soccer for Torino in Italy.

The 81-year-old鈥檚 fellow Manchester United great Bobby Charlton 鈥 the two of them feature in the United Trinity statue outside Old Trafford alongside the late George Best 鈥 was diagnosed with dementia in November last year.

United issued a statement saluting one of 鈥渢heir greatest legends.鈥

鈥淲e applaud Denis鈥 brave words and will continue to offer whatever support we can as he adapts to this challenging condition,鈥 the club said.
