Veh to take over at Wolfsburg
FORMER VfB Stuttgart coach Armin Veh will take over from Felix Magath at Bundesliga champion VfL Wolfsburg, the club said yesterday.
Veh, who led Stuttgart to its 2007 title, would officially be presented today, the club said. Wolfsburg Chairman Hans-Dieter Poetsch said Veh would be the new coach late on Saturday, hours after the team had clinched its first Bundesliga title with a 5-1 win over Werder Bremen. Magath, who will join Schalke 04 after a two-year spell at Wolfsburg, said Veh was a good choice.
Latvala triumphs
Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala won the Rally of Italy yesterday while world champion Sebastien Loeb was relegated from third to fourth after receiving a two-minute penalty for breaching safety rules. Latvala triumphed after the Ford team decided against ordering him to let second-placed teammate Mikko Hirvonen take maximum points. A win for Hirvonen in Sardinia could have made a bigger dent on championship leader Loeb's advantage but Latvala, who beat compatriot Hirvonen by 29.4 seconds after the three-day rally, was allowed to seal the second victory of his career. France's Loeb has 55 points this year with Finn Hirvonen now second on 38.
Xiong bout moved
Daisuke Naito's fifth defense of his WBC flyweight title against China's Xiong Zhaozhong this week has been moved to Tokyo. The fight was originally to be held in Shanghai tomorrow, but will now take place in Tokyo on the same day, the Nikkansports newspaper reported yesterday. Officials at Naito's Miyata Gym were quoted as saying the move was due to a "promoter-related problem."
