Wallaby Genia signs up with Rebels for 2 years

Wallabies vice captain Will Genia will return to play his club rugby in Australia with Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels, the Australian Rugby Union said yesterday.

The 78-test halfback had been playing for the Wallabies while based with Stade Francais in Paris since 2015. Genia, 29, previously played nine Super Rugby seasons with the Queensland Reds, including winning a title with the club in 2011, but chose to head south to the Rebels upon his return to Australia. The veteran said the club, which survived being axed after the ARU last week decided to cull the Western Force, had a good young team which he could help develop. Genia, who will appear for the Wallabies against New Zealand in this weekend’s Bledisloe Cup opener in Sydney, will join his Rebels teammates early next year.
