Women spikers end 12-year wait

China overpowered host Japan 3-1 to capture its fourth women’s volleyball World Cup title yesterday.

The Chinese team, led by coach Jenny Lang Ping, beat a tenacious Japanese side 25-17, 22-25, 25-21, 25-22 in Nagoya to claim its first World Cup crown since 2003 and its first major championship since 2004 when Lang’s team won the Olympic title in the Greece capital Athens.

As a player, “Iron Hammer” Lang led the Chinese to the 1981 and 1985 World Cup titles. With the victory China also secured a berth at the 2016 Olympics.

Zhu Ting scored 27 points as China improved to 10-1 atop the standings. Serbia finished second followed by the United States in third.

The US defeated the Dominican Republic 25-10, 25-19, 25-17 earlier while Serbia outlasted Argentina 25-16, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25, 15-4.

Nicole Fawcett scored 15 points for the US, which finished the tournament with nine wins and two losses.

Tetori Dixon had 12 points and Jordan Larson-Burbach chipped in with 11.

The US women produced eight aces compared to two for the Dominican Republic, which finished with a 5-6 record.

In other matches, Russia overpowered Algeria 25-5, 25-6, 25-9, and Kenya needed five sets for a 23-25, 29-27, 25-27, 25-23, 15-13 win over Peru.

The Russians finished with a 9-2 record, identical to the US.
