World biathlon chief quits over doping ‘cover-up’
The president of the International Biathlon Union, Anders Besseberg, resigned yesterday after being targeted in an investigation by Austrian and Norwegian authorities into claims he covered up doping.
Austrian police raided the IBU’s headquarters in Salzburg this week and the World Anti-Doping Agency is probing claims of close links between the IBU and Russian sports officials. A confidential WADA report seen by Le Monde said Russia had attempted to buy the silence of biathlon officials to cover up drug use, the French daily reported on Wednesday. The IBU had done “everything so that no proceedings would be opened against the Russians”, said the newspaper. The WADA report dated late 2017 and quoted by Le Monde said: “The main goal of the corruption is to protect doped Russian athletes.” Besseberg has run the IBU since it was founded in 1993 and also sits on the WADA board as a representative of Winter Olympic sports.
