Yacht clubs favor traditional regatta
Five of the most influential yacht clubs in America's Cup history are urging defending champion Alinghi of Switzerland and American syndicate BMW Oracle Racing to negotiate a conventional regatta rather than face off in a rare one-on-one showdown in giant mulithulls.
The five clubs sent a letter on Thursday to Societe Nautique de Geneve, which backs Alinghi, and San Francisco's Golden Gate Yacht Club, which supports BMW Oracle Racing. The letter went out one week after Golden Gate Yacht Club was declared the Challenger of Record in a unanimous ruling by New York's top court. The ruling gives Golden Gate the right to negotiate race terms with SNG. BMW Oracle Racing said this week that it hopes to negotiate a conventional America's Cup series with Alinghi and avoid a one-on-one showdown.
