Yang heads trio of China KO winners

SEVEN professional duels, including two title bouts, a few knockouts and some blood — it was all on show in Shanghai last night at the “Fist of Power”, the first world class professional boxing event held in China’s mainland.

Ik Yang, or Yang Lianhui, from Dalian, knocked out Thailand’s Sukkasem Kietyoungyuth in the eighth round of their 10-round WBO Asia Pacific Lightweight title bout to clinch his third intercontinental belt at the Mercedez-Benz Arena in Pudong New Area.

Yang was in his elements right from the start. He knocked his opponent down in the very first round, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

The 29-year-old kept a cool head as he preserved his stamina in the first seven rounds before sending his Thai opponent to the ground with a flurry of heavy punches. There was no coming back for Sukkasem from there.

“The previous few fights didn’t go the full distance, and I got only one minute to warm up. But the fight went smoothly, just like a script,” Yang told the post-fight press conference, alluding to earlier fights which saw compatriot boxers, Qu Peng and Zhou Yunfei, knock out their opponents Marlon Alta of Philippines and Marcos Amado of Australia, respectively.

In the 12-round WBA Interim Light Flyweight title bout, Filipino Randy Petalcorin needed only seven rounds to end the challenge of Panama’s Walter Tello.

The 6,000-seat venue was more than 90 percent full last night, with the high-tech incendiary sound and light effects giving the receptive audience a maiden taste of a world class professional boxing feast.
