Yao cheers at Shaoxing run

THE 2015 Shaoxing Cross City Orienteering was held in the Zhejiang Province city over the weekend.

One thousand runners participated in the 2.5-kilometer race followed by orienteering. The route covered the city’s scenic and tourism spots, including the old town area that boasts a nearly 2,500-year history, as well as the native residence of well known Chinese writer Lu Xun.

Former National Basketball Association star Yao Ming fired the starting gun for the event. Claiming to be a history lover, the Shanghai native spoke about his fondness for old water towns like Shaoxing.

“It’s a pity I could not run freely along the aged lanes (given my conspicuous height and identity). But I like the city and will think about holding a basketball training camp here in the future.”

A foot injury has prevented Yao from taking part in long distance races though he has fond memories of running in the rain in past training sessions. The retired hoops star also attended promotional activities for running events in Beijing and Xi’an.

Jointly organized by the Shaoxing City government and Starz Sports International, the 2015 Shaoxing Cross City Orienteering race aimed at combining sports with tourism, history and culture.

Starz Sports International revealed that it will organize a women’s half-marathon in Shanghai later this year.
