Zhang shatters world mark in rifle 3P
China’s Zhang Changhong grabbed the last shooting gold of the Tokyo Olympics yesterday, putting the icing on the cake with a world-record score in the men’s 50-meter rifle 3 positions event.
The 21-year-old aggregated 466 points to eclipse compatriot Yang Haoran’s 2018 mark of 465.3 and become the event’s youngest Olympic gold medalist.
Russian Sergey Kamenskiy settled for his second successive Olympic silver in the event after tallying 464.2. Serbian Milenko Sebic claimed the bronze.
Just before eliminations kicked in, Zhang momentarily surrendered the top spot but he quickly regained it, maintaining a Zen-like poise in the final.
“I really stayed focused on my position and my action, rather than focusing on others,” said the shooter coached by two-time Olympic champion Du Li.
“I had to wipe the sweat off my brow and focus on my technique, and not worry how far behind I was at that stage.”
