ZHANG Guowei cleared 2.32 meters to break the national record in the men's high jump at the national indoor athletics championships in Nanjing yesterday. Zhang, 21, improved the old mark, set by Zhu Jianhua on March 5, 1986, in Kobe, Japan, by one centimeter. "Zhang had previously conquered the height of 2.31 meters three times. Today he proved his capability by clearing 2.32," said Feng Shuyong, head coach of China's track and field team. The current Asian indoor record of 2.37 was set by Qatar's Moataz Essa Barshim last year. Cuban Javier Sotomayor holds the world indoor record at 2.43 meters.
