Blackhawks roll over the Avs as Sharp nets hat trick

Chicago moved to the top of the NHL standings by routing Colorado 7-2 on Friday, with Patrick Sharp notching his third career hat trick and setting up one of Jonathan Toews’ two goals.
Among other key results, San Jose edged rival Phoenix in a shootout, Pittsburgh beat Carolina in overtime, and Boston cruised to a big win over Ottawa.
Chicago’s Toews and Sharp both finished with four points, while Michal Handzus and Kris Versteeg also scored for the Blackhawks, who are 7-1-1 in their past nine games.
Sharp, who celebrated his 32nd birthday on Friday, has 10 goals in the past nine games.
Paul Stastny and Gabriel Landeskog netted for the Avalanche.
San Jose’s Patrick Marleau scored in regulation and in the shootout as the Sharks downed Phoenix 4-3.
Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns both had a goal and an assist while Logan Couture also netted in the shootout for San Jose, which moved level with Los Angeles for third place in the West.
Pittsburgh’s James Neal scored at 1:03 of overtime to give the Penguins a 4-3 victory over Carolina.
NHL scoring leader Sidney Crosby had a goal, and Chris Conner and Deryk Engelland also scored to help the Eastern Conference leaders win their 13th in 15 games.
Drayson Bowman scored with 2:29 left in regulation. Nathan Gerbe had a goal and an assist, and Andrej Sekera scored for the Hurricanes, who lost for the seventh time in eight games, with four coming in overtime.
Boston’s Tuukka Rask made 33 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Bruins beat Ottawa 5-0 and made it eight-straight home wins.
In other games, it was: Jets 6, Wild 4; Capitals 3, Rangers 2; Stars 4, Predators 1; Blue Jackets 2, Devils 1 (SO), Maple Leafs 4, Sabres 3 (SO); and Oilers 2, Flames 0.
