Broncos, Patriots to square off in 2nd round
THE Denver Broncos stunned the Pittsburgh Steelers with an 80-yard touchdown strike from Tim Tebow on the first play of overtime for a 29-23 win on Sunday to advance to the second round of the National Football League playoffs.
Tebow, whose shortcomings as a passer have been well documented, connected with Demaryius Thomas on the first play from scrimmage after the overtime kickoff to floor the defending AFC champion Steelers and bring the Mile High crowd to its feet celebrating the team's first playoff win since 2005.
"I don't think it's the first time our offense has clicked ... but I thought the timing was great. We had struggled over the last couple weeks and a lot of that progress was because of our quarterback," said Denver coach John Fox.
"A lot was said, a lot was written and there's been a lot of critique on him but I thought he stepped up in a huge way tonight and I think he was a big part of us winning the game."
The Broncos now hit the road full of confidence ready to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots when the second round of the NFL playoffs resume on January 14.
Atlanta routed
In East Rutherford, New Jersey, quarterback Eli Manning punctuated his best pro season by throwing for three touchdowns in New York's 24-2 rout of misfiring Atlanta in the NFC wildcard game.
Manning hooked up on a 72-yard catch and run by Hakeem Nicks in the third quarter that put away the inept Falcons (10-7).
Manning also connected on a 4-yard TD with Nicks in the second period, and a 27-yard TD throw to Mario Manningham in the fourth quarter that finished it off.
He also scrambled for a 14-yard gain and sparked the team to their first playoff victory since the Super Bowl victory over undefeated New England four years ago.
Next up is just as big a challenge for the Giants (10-7): on the road at the defending champion Green Bay Packers next Sunday.
New York lost 35-38 to Green Bay in December.
