Cassel option

THE New England Patriots have used their 2009 franchise designation on quarterback Matt Cassel, the National Football League team said on Thursday, giving them an option while regular starter Tom Brady recovers from knee surgery. Cassel, seldom used in three years as Brady's back-up, stepped in when Brady was injured in the opening game. Without the franchise tag, Cassel would have become a free agent later this month.
