Cerrato resigns in wake of Redskins' 4-9 record

Vinny Cerrato resigned yesterday as the Washington Redskins' executive vice-president of football operations in the wake of the team's disappointing 4-9 record.
Bruce Allen, 53, the son of former Redskins coach and Hall of Famer George Allen, will replace Cerrato, team owner Daniel Snyder said.
"Obviously this has been a very difficult season, one where we have disappointed everyone -- the fans, ourselves," Snyder told a news conference at the Redskins' training facility.
"We understand that. It's been difficult. When it gets to the point where you're looking at what we need to do for the future, you look at change. And that's what I decided to do."
Cerrato had been in the post for two years and previously served with the Redskins in five different positions, beginning in 1999.
"This is not the first time that a general manager has resigned this season in the NFL," said Redskins linebacker London Fletcher. "Nothing surprises me in the NFL."
Allen was the general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2004-2008.
"Bruce Allen is the personification of an NFL winner," Snyder said. "Our fans know his heritage; we know his abilities. He is the right person to lead our club."
Allen told reporters he was excited about his appointment.
"If you told me 35 years ago, I would be standing here at new Redskins Park, I do think I would have bet on that," Allen told reporters.
"It's exciting because of the history, the tradition, the comfort about coming home.
"Everybody who knows me, and hopefully you will get to know me better, knows that the principles of football in my mind are simple, it's a team.
"It's 53 men, the entire staff, everybody in the building going in the same direction for one common goal, and that's to win."
