Chiefs deal Smith to 鈥楽kins
The Kansas City Chiefs have reached an agreement to trade their starting quarterback Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins, the National Football League said on its website on Tuesday. The Redskins were expected to send a 2018 third-round pick and a player to be named later in exchange for the 33-year-old, who has led Kansas City for the past five years. The trade, which cannot be completed until the new NFL business year begins on March 14, would see Smith sign a four-year deal with Washington for US$94 million, with US$71 million guaranteed, the Kansas City Star reported. It added that the trade of Smith, who has a US$20.6-million salary-cap figure for 2018, to the Redskins would save the Chiefs US$17 million. The move likely spells the end of free agent Kirk Cousins鈥 time in Washington while the Chiefs can now turn to 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes. Kansas City traded two first-round picks and a third-rounder to move up 17 spots and grab Mahomes 10th overall in April. Smith is coming off a season when he had 4,042 yards, 26 touchdowns and led the NFL with a passer rating of 104.7. The Chiefs won the AFC West this season at 10-6 but lost 21-22 to the Tennessee Titans in the wildcard playoff. The Redskins limped to a 7-9 finish in 2017 amid injuries. They made the playoffs at 9-7 in 2015 and missed out at 8-7-1 in 2016.
