Chiefs edge Browns to stay unbeaten

Alex Smith threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns as the Kansas City Chiefs held off the scrappy Cleveland Browns late in the fourth quarter to preserve a 23-17 victory and remain the National Football League’s lone unbeaten team.

“We love it,” said Smith, the first quarterback since 1970 to win his first eight games with a new team. “You want the stages to get bigger. That’s why you put all the work in. You want this opportunity.”

Kansas City is the first team in NFL history to win its first eight games after having the league’s worst record the previous season.

“Not that anybody sneaks up on anybody in this league, but yeah, we’re the only undefeated team,” Smith said after the Chiefs held out the Browns’ late surge. “I think that teams have recognized how we’re playing and no question, they’re coming prepared.”

Detroit produced an unexpected 31-30 win over the Dallas Cowboys, with Matthew Stafford’s 1-yard lunge over a pile of linemen with 12 seconds left and Calvin Johnson’s 329 yards receiving lifting the Lions to a comeback victory.

Detroit (5-3) overcame four turnovers and a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Dallas fell to 4-4.

Elsewhere in the NFL, it was: Saints 35, Bills 17; Patriots 27, Dolphins 17; Giants 15, Eagles 7; 49ers 42, Jaguars 10 (in London); Raiders 21, Steelers 18; Bengals 49, Jets 9; Cardinals 27, Falcons 13; Broncos 45, Redskins 21; and Packers 44, Vikings 31.
