Colts down Titans to tie NFL record
THE Indianapolis Colts tied an NFL record when they beat the Tennessee Titans 27-17 for their 21st consecutive regular-season victory on Sunday.
The Colts, 12-0 this season, equalled the mark set by the New England Patriots from 2006 through 2008. They can break the record with a win over the Denver Broncos at home next Sunday.
"There were enough good things to make us feel pretty good about ourselves, and certainly enough things to humble us as well," Colts coach Jim Caldwell told reporters after his team ended a five-game Titans' winning streak.
"We know we have a lot of work to do before next week."
Indianapolis, which needed rallies in its previous five games, stormed to a 21-3 lead late in the first half on two rushing touchdowns by Joseph Addai and Peyton Manning's only touchdown pass of the game to Austin Collie.
But the Colts, who had already clinched the AFC South title and a playoff berth, converted just two Matt Stover field goals for the remainder of the game as Tennessee attempted a rally of their own.
Vince Young got the Titans within 21-10 on a six yard pass to Kenny Britt with seconds remaining in the first half and threw 17 yards to Bo Scaife late in the fourth quarter.
The Titans used an onside kick to gain one more possession with 1:23 remaining, but the Colts defence held.
"We started a little faster than we have in recent weeks, but in the second half we did not do quite as well as we would like," said Caldwell.
"But we had some really important defensive stops."
Manning threw for 270 yards, completing 24 of 37 passes.
Young had 241 yards passing and Titans running back Chris Johnson rushed for 113 yards on 27 carries for his seventh consecutive 100 yard game.
In Maryland, Garrett Hartley kicked an 18-yard field goal 6:29 into overtime as the New Orleans Saints remained unbeaten after 12 games with a 33-30 victory over the Washington Redskins.
The Saints clinched the National Football Conference South with a far-from-perfect win that shows just how charmed their season is becoming.
Drew Brees led an 80-yard drive with no timeouts, taking just 33 seconds to tie the game. He hit a wide-open Robert Meachem over the middle for a 53-yard touchdown with 1:19 to play.
In Glendale, Arizona, Kurt Warner, back after missing a game with a concussion, threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns as Arizona's defense stifled Brett Favre and Minnesota in a stunningly one-sided 30-17 victory.
Favre set an NFL record for consecutive appearances, but game No. 283 in a row was no night to remember for him or the rest of the Vikings. The 40-year-old quarterback, with just three interceptions in the first the first 11 games, was picked off twice and sacked three times.
Even more startling, Arizona held Adrian Peterson to a season-low 19 yards in 13 carries and outrushed Minnesota 113-62.
Elsewhere, it was: Raiders 27, Steelers 24; Dolphins 22, Patriots 21; Eagles 34, Falcons 7; Giants 31, Cowboys 24; Chargers 30, Browns 23; Bengals 23, Lions 13; Jaguars 23, Texans 18; Panthers 16, Buccaneers 6; Bears 17, Rams 9; Broncos 44, Chiefs 13; and Seahawks 20, 49ers 17.
