Colts ride Luck to hammer 49ers

A RETURN to California proved to be just what Andrew Luck needed as the Indianapolis quarterback led the Colts to a 27-7 rout of the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Luck, who starred at nearby Stanford University during his United States college football career, completed 18-of-27 passes for 164 yards and ran for a touchdown as he won the battle of the young quarterbacks by outplaying San Francisco’s Colin Kaepernick.

“That was a heavyweight fight right there,” Colts head coach Chuck Pagano said. “Just a phenomenal, phenomenal effort.”

Luck got some assistance as the Colts also clamped down on the defense by holding the 49ers (1-2) to 254 total yards.

Indianapolis improved to 2-1 on the National Football League season. The Colts compiled 179 rushing yards, with Ahmad Bradshaw gaining 95 and a touchdown on 19 carries, and the newly acquired Trent Richardson scoring on his first touchdown as a Colt.

One week after suffering four turnovers in a 3-29 loss at the Seattle Seahawks, Kaepernick managed just 150 yards on 13-of-27 passing while being intercepted once and losing a fumble.

“We have to be better,” Kaepernick said. “I have to be better. I have to be able to make throws down the field.”

Elsewhere in the NFL on Sunday, it was: Panthers 38, Giants 0; Titans 20, Chargers 17; Saints 31, Cardinals 7; Cowboys 31, Rams 7; Browns 31, Vikings 27; Ravens 30, Texans 9; Lions 27, Redskins 20; Patriots 23, Buccaneers 3; Bengals 34, Packers 30; Dolphins 27, Falcons 23;  Seahawks 45, Jaguars 17; Jets 27, Bills 20; and Bears 40, Steelers 23.

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Cam Newton threw three touchdown passes and ran for another as the Panthers sacked Eli Manning seven times in handing Tom Coughlin his worst defeat as coach of the Giants (0-3).

It was the largest margin of victory in Panthers history.

The Panthers (1-2) allowed Newton to run out of the read option, which helped open up an offense that had been mostly stagnant this season. Newton had 223 yards passing and threw two touchdown passes to Brandon LaFell and one to Ted Ginn Jr. He ran for 45 yards and his first touchdown of the season.
