Concerts galore as Super Bowl madness kicks in
The Super Bowl takes place a week before the Grammys, but the big game is rivaling the awards shows with a plethora of live concerts and on-site musicians, from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica to Pharrell and Skrillex.
Alicia Keys, OneRepublic and the Band Perry will perform at concerts on Saturday, Friday and Thursday, respectively. Dave Matthews Band will take the stage on Thursday and as part of the Sports Illustrated Experience, Iggy Azalea will perform on Friday, the same night Nick Jonas will perform at the annual 鈥淓SPN The Party.鈥
Lil Wayne and A$AP Rocky will headline the Maxim Party on Saturday, while Avicii, Elle King and Travis Scott will perform at a Rolling Stone magazine party the same night.
Though Super Bowl 50 will be held at Levi鈥檚 Stadium in Santa Clara, California, most of the concerts and parties will take place in San Francisco.
Fall Out Boy announced on Monday that they will perform on Friday during Verizon鈥檚 go90 Live free concert series at The Regency Ballroom.
The rock band, which has performed around the Super Bowl in the past, said performing ahead of the big game gives musicians the opportunity to gain new fans.
鈥淧eople are there and they鈥檙e hyped for the Super Bowl, so it鈥檚 a chance to win people over, which is awesome,鈥 frontman Pete Wentz said in an interview last week.
Metallica will perform at the AT&T Park the night before the big game, where the Carolina Panthers will take on the Denver Broncos and halftime show performers include Beyonc茅 and Coldplay.
Meanwhile, the Broncos are still not sure if this will be the last game for 39-year-old Manning.
鈥淚t鈥檚 always a hard decision,鈥 Denver general manager and former All-Star John Elway Elway said. 鈥淲e鈥檒l give him plenty of time. ... Bottom line is Peyton鈥檚 going to make the best decision for him.鈥
The Broncos are determined to hang onto backup Brock Osweiler and not lose him in free agency.
Osweiler started seven games this season for the AFC champions as Manning struggled with a foot injury, and he performed creditably, passing for 1,967 yards and 10 touchdowns with an 86.4 quarterback rating.
鈥淲e鈥檙e hoping to get something done with Brock this offseason,鈥 Elway said. 鈥淲e needed both quarterbacks. We wouldn鈥檛 be here without both of them.鈥
Manning didn鈥檛 offer any hints on Monday.
鈥淚 haven鈥檛 made my mind up and I don鈥檛 see myself knowing that until after the season鈥檚 over,鈥 the five-time MVP said.
Even Elway struggled to make the final call to walk away for good. He went out a Super Bowl winner and Super Bowl MVP after the 1998 season with a win against Atlanta, but still ran his retirement thoughts by his father as a sounding board.
