Cowboys sink Redskins on Bailey heroics
DAN Bailey nailed a 54-yard last-gasp field goal as the Dallas Cowboys kept their National Football League season alive with a 19-16 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday.
Bailey held his nerve to settle an error-strewn battle between the NFC East rivals which exploded into life during a frenzied final two minutes.
Bailey’s game-winning score was set up after the Cowboys’ Lucky Whitehead set off on a 45-yard run to the Cowboys 43 with the score tied at 16-16.
Backup Dallas quarterback Matt Cassel — shouldering his team’s offensive burden after a season-ending injury to Tony Romo — connected with Dez Bryant for two quick completions to advance 20 yards. Two incomplete passes followed, but Bailey’s long-range effort sailed through the posts with yards to spare and Dallas clinched a victory which saw it improve to 4-8.
“It’s a crazy game, man. This is a crazy game. We battled and we got the W,” said Bryant. “We’ve got everything to win and everything to lose. It’s right there.”
Washington, which could have taken a grip on the division with a victory, fell back to 5-7, the same record as divisional rivals New York and Philadelphia.
Dallas scored the game’s first TD with 74 seconds remaining to lead 16-9 after recovering DeSean Jackson’s fumble on an ill-advised return. He caught the ball at the 16-yard line, got past the 20 but then reversed course and ran back to the 1. As he began a second advance he was surrounded and the ball popped out and was recovered by Dallas punter Chris Jones at the 15 with only 86 seconds left.
After the subsequent touchdown, Washington had time to tie it when Jackson made a 28-yard TD catch, but then Bailey hit the go-ahead kick.
