Eagles on top in NFC East

PHILADELPHIA'S LeSean McCoy ran for a 50-yard touchdown on a fourth-down play late in the fourth quarter to lift the Eagles to a 27-17 win over the New York Giants on Sunday and into first place in the NFC East.

Quarterback Michael Vick bobbled the snap on the fourth-and-one play but managed to pitch the ball to McCoy, who dashed around the left side and cut upfield for the touchdown with four minutes remaining.

Eagles kicker David Akers added some breathing room with a 30-yard field goal with 22 seconds remaining. The Eagles improved to 7-3 while the Giants dropped to 6-4.

The Philadelphia defense limited the Giants to a season-low 208 yards of offense and registered five turnovers on three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

"They were flying around, they were aggressive. Hats off to our defense," Eagles coach Andy Reid.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin lamented the turnovers.

"This disregard for the ball ... cost us the football game," he said.

New York had rallied from a 16-3 deficit thanks to two Philadelphia mistakes - a pass interference call in the end zone at the end of the third quarter and a fourth-quarter fumble by Vick - for two touchdowns to take a 17-16 lead.

McCoy then scored the touchdown to put the Eagles in front, which they extended with a two-point conversion for a 24-17 lead.

The Giants however squandered their last chance on a fourth-and-six from their own 44-yard line with 3:13 left when Manning made a crucial mistake.

He had dropped back to pass but found space and took off running untouched for 16 yards before he dove forward, instead of sliding feet first and ending the play, and lost the ball, which was ruled a fumble because he had not been touched by defenders.

Philadelphia recovered the ball before Akers completed the scoring with his fourth field goal of the game.

"My mistake," Manning said. "You have to slow down and slide, don't worry about those extra yards."

Vick, who threw for four touchdowns and ran for two more last week in the Eagles' 59-28 rout of Washington, found the NFL's top-ranked defense much tougher on Sunday though he completed 24-for-38 passes for 258 yards. He had no touchdowns but two passes were dropped in the end zone.
