Eagles use inspired Vick to defeat Redskins

Michael Vick threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Philadelphia Eagles unleashed coach Chip Kelly’s frenetic offense on the NFL with a 33-27 win Monday over the Washington Redskins in Maryland.

At San Diego, Randy Bullock kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired as the Houston Texans rallied from a 21-point deficit in the second half for a 31-28 victory over the Chargers.

LeSean McCoy ran for 184 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries for the Eagles, who failed to make the playoffs the past two seasons.

“I feel good about where we are,” Vick said. “Tonight we showed 60 percent of our offense.

“We have a lot of talent and speed. We have a smart group of guys who know how to adapt to the game.”

Kelly was making his NFL debut after spending the past six seasons coaching US college football.

“I had a lot of fun tonight and I think our guys had a lot of fun,” Kelly said. “But you’re always going to say that when you win.”

Vick completed 15-of-25 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns as the Eagles racked up 443 total yards and 26 first downs.

Vick also had nine carries and rushed for a touchdown while DeSean Jackson caught seven passes for a game-high 104 yards and a touchdown. It was Jackson’s 16th career 100-yard receiving game.

Veteran Vick, who spent 23 months in a US prison for his role in a brutal dogfighting ring, won the starting job this year over second-year quarterback Nick Foles and rookie Matt Barkley.

Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III struggled at times in his first game since suffering torn knee ligaments during a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks back in early January.

The reigning NFL offensive rookie of the year completed 30-of-49 passes for 329 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

In the late Monday night game, Houston scored 24 unanswered points as the Texans rallied again San Diego.

The Texans overcame a 21-point deficit and Randy Bullock booted a 41-yard field goal as time expired to beat the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.

After falling behind 28-7 early in the third quarter, the Texans defense didn’t allow another first down.
