Giants re-sign backup quarterback Carr, cut three veterans

THE New York Giants re-signed quarterback David Carr and released three veteran players who ended the season on the injured reserve list, the NFL team said yesterday.

The Giants terminated the contracts of running back Reuben Droughns, cornerback Sam Madison and safety Sammy Knight.

Carr, a seven-year veteran who joined the Giants last year as a backup to Eli Manning, played in three games in 2008 completing nine out of 12 passes for 115 yards and two touchdowns.

He was the first overall selection of the 2002 NFL Draft by the expansion Houston Texans and played five years there and one with the Carolina Panthers before joining the Giants.

In Droughns, Madison and Knight, the Giants released three players with a combined 33 years of NFL experience.
