Giants sign Jacobs to four-year contract

THE New York Giants moved to keep the NFL's top ground game intact by signing halfback Brandon Jacobs to a four-year contract, the team said yesterday.

Jacobs, who rushed for a career-high 1,089 yards and 15 touchdowns last season despite missing three games with a knee injury, will remain with the team until the end of the 2012 season.

"Both parties are happy to get a long-term deal done," general manager Jerry Reese said on the team's website (http://www.giants.com).

"Now Brandon can totally concentrate on the offseason programme and get himself ready to go this fall."

Jacobs, 26, could have opted for free agency but wanted to remain with the Giants, the NFL's top rushing team with a 157-yard per game average.

"I was confident all along that this was going to get done. I didn't panic one bit," said the four-year NFL veteran.
