Manning, Broncos end Chiefs' undefeated run

Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos handed Kansas City its first defeat of the National Football League season on Sunday, beating the Chiefs 27-17 to join them atop the AFC West.

Manning’s tender ankle wasn’t a factor, thanks in part to his offensive line’s stellar job against a Chiefs defense that came in leading the league with 36 quarterback sacks.

He wasn’t touched once, completing 24-of-40 passes for 323 yards. Manning threw one touchdown pass and Montee Ball ran for two more touchdowns for the Broncos, who denied the Chiefs their first 10-0 start in club history.

“The protection was outstanding,” Manning said. “Really proud of those guys up front.”

The game was the day’s hot ticket, with the sports power-couple of golf superstar Tiger Woods and Olympic ski champion girlfriend Lindsey Vonn spotted among the crowd.

Knowshon Moreno rushed for 79 yards on 27 carries for Denver, the first team this season to score more than 17 points against the Chiefs.

Quarterback Alex Smith threw two TD passes for the Chiefs, who will be out for revenge when they host the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium in a fortnight.

Elsewhere, it was: Bears 23, Ravens 20 (in overtime); Raiders 28, Texans 23; Bills 37, Jets 14; Buccaneers 41, Falcons 28; Steelers 37, Lions 27; Eagles 24, Redskins 16; Bengals 41, Browns 20; Cardinals 27, Jaguars 14; Dolphins 20, Chargers 16; Seahawks 41, Vikings 20; Saints 23, 49ers 20; and Giants 27, Packers 13.

Meanwhile, former San Francisco 49ers great Joe Montana said yesterday that highly-paid rookie quarterbacks are under increasing pressure to make an instant impact in the NFL.

“There’s more pressure because they’re making a lot more money. When you get paid all that money they want you to start right away,” he said during a promotional event for NFL China in Beijing.

“Just to stay and make it through the year, it’s pretty good. If you can do that and hang on to your job for that long as a rookie, then you’re doing a pretty good job.”

Huge hopes have been pinned on the crop of new recruits over recent seasons, with the spotlight on the likes of Heisman trophy-winning college quarterbacks Sam Bradford of the St Louis Rams, Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III at the Washington Redskins.

Montana downplayed what fans should expect from new players. “It’s a tough go, no matter what, for that first year,” Montana said.
