Packers stamp on Cowboys; Pats falter
AARON Rodgers threw for 289 yards and three touchdowns, and Brandon Jackson scored twice as the Green Bay Packers thrashed the Dallas Cowboys 45-7 on Sunday.
It was a new nadir in a lost season for the Cowboys (1-7), who came into 2010 with Super Bowl aspirations. And it's sure to kick off a new round of speculation about the future of coach Wade Phillips, despite recent statements from team owner Jerry Jones that a mid-season firing was unlikely.
James Jones caught eight passes for 123 yards and a TD for the Packers (6-3), who have won three straight.
Green Bay's Clay Matthews added a final dose of embarrassment in the fourth quarter, picking off a pass from Jon Kitna and running it back 62 yards for a TD.
Elsewhere in the National Football League, it was: Browns 34, Patriots 14; Vikings 27, Cardinals 24 (in overtime); Raiders 23, Chiefs 20 (in OT); Jets 23, Lions 20 (in OT); Eagles 26, Colts 24; Saints 34, Panthers 3; Giants 41, Seahawks 7; Bears 22, Bills 19; Falcons 27, Buccaneers 21; Chargers 29, Texans 23; and Ravens 26, Dolphins 10.
Upset victory
In Cleveland, the Browns, who recorded an upset victory two weeks ago against the defending Super Bowl champions the New Orleans Saints, had running back Peyton Hillis to thank as he rushed for 184 yards and two TDs.
For a team that had struggled at 1-5 early this year after going 5-11 last season, the victory indicates that coach Eric Mangini is getting something right in Ohio.
"First you learn how to work, then you learn how to compete, then you learn how to win and then you learn how to win consistently," Mangini said after the game.
The Cardinals had a 14-point lead over the Vikings in Minneapolis before an Adrian Paterson TD and a superb 25-yard TD pass from Brett Favre to Visanthe Shiancoe took the game into overtime.
Favre threw for a career-high 446 yards and two TDs - along with two interceptions - and Ryan Longwell's 30-yard field goal in overtime secured a 27-24 win.
It was a much-needed victory for Minnesota, which had won just one of its last four games with Favre and coach Brad Childress facing rising criticism. "We needed a win, time will tell if that gives us a spark," said Favre.
