Prater sets mark as Broncos beat Titans

Matt Prater braved the freezing weather to set a National Football League record with a 64-yard field goal and Peyton Manning threw four more touchdown passes on Sunday to lift the Denver Broncos to a 51-28 victory over the Tennessee Titans.

The temperature was minus 10 degrees Celsius when Prater kicked his record setter to close the first half and pull Denver within 21-20.

Prater eclipsed the record of 63 yards first set 43 years ago by Tom Dempsey of New Orleans.

Equalling Dempsey’s booming kick of 1970 were Denver’s Jason Elam in 1998, Oakland’s Sabastian Janikowski in 2011 and San Francisco’s David Akers last season.

Prater, 29, had a previous career best of 59 yards.

Janikowski missed on a 64-yard attempt in 2007. He also attempted a 76 yarder a year later.

This marked the 20th kick of at least 50 yards for Prater who has attempted 26 field goals from 50 yards or longer.

After going undrafted in 2006, Prater was signed by the Detroit Lions but failed to make the team. He then signed with the Atlanta Falcons, making his NFL debut a year later.

At Mile High Park in Denver, Manning opened the third quarter by leading the Broncos on a pair of touchdown drives, and the Broncos (11-2) easily wrapped up a playoff spot.

Denver’s quarterback set a club record with 39 completions and finished with 397 yards.

Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for 172 yards for the Titans (5-8), who went 73 yards in five plays to score on the game’s first drive and led 21-10 in the middle of the second quarter.

Elsewhere, it was: Packers 22, Falcons 21; Ravens 29, Vikings 26; Chiefs 45, Redskins 10; Buccaneers 27, Bills 6; Dolphins 34, Steelers 28; Eagles 34, Lions 20; Bengals 42, Colts 28; Patriots 27, Browns 26; Jets 37, Raiders 27; 49ers 19, Seahawks 17; Chargers 37, Giants 14; Cardinals 30, Rams 10; and Saints 31, Panthers 13.
