Titans fire coach Whisenhunt

THE Tennessee Titans have fired head coach Ken Whisenhunt after 23 games in charge, the National Football League team said yesterday.
The Titans lost 6-20 to the Houston Texans on Sunday, their sixth successive defeat.
“After thoughtful consideration, the decision has been made to relieve Ken Whisenhunt of his head coaching duties,” Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement on its website.
“We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction. I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward.”
Mike Mularkey, an assistant coach under Whisenhunt, will take over as interim coach.
Meanwhile, veteran NFL tight end Vernon Davis is headed from San Francisco to Denver, Broncos general manager John Elway said on Monday, a move that will give Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning an added target.
“We’ve agreed to trade for two-time Pro Bowl TE Vernon Davis from SF. He’ll be a valuable addition to our team w/his experience & leadership,” Elway wrote on Twitter.
The Broncos are hoping Davis, who has spent all 10 of his NFL seasons with the 49ers, will fill the void left by Julius Thomas, who left to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the offseason.
The Broncos are unbeaten at 7-0, but their first six wins depended on a strong defensive showing, with the Manning-led offense often lacking before a breakout 29-10 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
Davis has 441 career receptions for 5,640 yards and 55 touchdowns.
The 31-year-old Davis reportedly exchanged words with San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick in a team meeting earlier this season.
The deal calls for the teams to trade late-round draft picks in 2016, with the 49ers getting a 6th-round pick in 2017.
