Vikings stay on course for playoffs
THE Minnesota Vikings kept their NFL playoff hopes alive with a 23-6 win at Houston on Sunday, preventing the Texans from clinching home-field advantage through the AFC playoffs.
Houston was held without a touchdown for the first time in 12 years, while Minnesota had its own offensive disappointment despite the victory, as Adrian Peterson had a disappointing game and is still some way short of reaching the 2,000-yard mark for the season.
Minnesota's win was among a slew of vital results on Sunday that influenced the playoff picture. Among the teams notching important wins were Seattle, Baltimore, Denver, Cincinnati, Green Bay, Chicago, Washington and Indianapolis.
Vikings tailback Peterson rushed for only 86 yards, his lowest total since mid-October. He has 1,898 yards this season and still needs another 208 to break the NFL single-season record held by Eric Dickerson.
Despite that, Minnesota still won comfortably as Christian Ponder threw a touchdown pass, Toby Gerhart added a score and Blair Walsh kicked three field goals. The Seattle Seahawks clinched a spot in the NFC playoffs with a 42-13 rout of the San Francisco 49ers.
Russell Wilson threw four touchdown passes to give him 25 for the season, one shy of Peyton Manning's rookie record of 26, while Marshawn Lynch scored twice, including on the opening drive to set the tone for the game, and ended with 111 yards. Richard Sherman returned a blocked field goal 90 yards for a touchdown and added an interception.
The Baltimore Ravens won the AFC North division and secured a home playoff game in the first weekend by beating the New York Giants 33-14.
Joe Flacco threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns for the Ravens, who scored touchdowns on their opening two possessions and amassed a season-high 533 yards. The defense was stingy, limiting the Giants to 186 yards. The defending Super Bowl champion, New York can't win the NFC East, but still have a chance to make the playoffs as a wildcard.
The Denver Broncos won their 10th straight game, beating the Cleveland Browns 34-12, moving equal with Houston atop the AFC standings. If Denver defeats Kansas City at home next week and Houston loses at Indianapolis, the Broncos would be the AFC's top seed.
