Vikings waive Moss in U-turn
THE Minnesota Vikings waived Randy Moss four games after acquiring the seven-time Pro Bowl wide receiver from the New England Patriots, the National Football League team said on Monday.
Moss, who did not fly back to Minnesota with the team after their 18-28 loss at New England on Sunday, has 24 hours for a team to claim him and his contract off waivers.
"This decision was made based on what we thought was in the best interests of the Minnesota Vikings, both in the short and long term," head coach Brad Childress said in a statement.
"We wish Randy the best as he moves forward in his career." The winless Buffalo Bills have the first chance to claim Moss since they have the worst record in the 32-team league. If no team bids for Moss he will become a free agent.
In four games with the Vikings, Moss caught 13 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns as the team went 1-4.
The 33-year-old, who leads all active NFL players with 153 career TD receptions, was drafted by the Vikings in the first round of the 1998 draft.
The big-play receiver spent his first seven seasons with the Vikings before a two-season stint with Oakland.
He joined the Patriots in 2007 and remained with the team until he was traded to the Vikings for a third-round draft pick last month.
Moss, who was fined US$25,000 last week for failing to cooperate with the media and make himself regularly available for interviews, stepped to the podium after the Patriots game but announced he wouldn't take any questions. He repeatedly expressed admiration for coach Bill Belichick and his former team, the Patriots, and criticized the Vikings for not taking enough of his game-planning advice.
