Blake runs year's second-fastest 100m

WORLD 100-meter champion Yohan Blake ran the year's second-fastest time on Wednesday, winning the Cayman Invitational in 9.84 seconds in an early tuneup for the London Olympics.

Only Usain Bolt - Blake's training partner in their home country of Jamaica - has run faster this year. Bolt won a meet in Kingston, Jamaica, in 9.82 last Saturday.

Blake won last year's 100 at world championships after Bolt was disqualified for a false start. The two aren't expected to square off in the 100 until Jamaica's Olympic trials at the end of June.

"I'm very pleased with my time," Blake said. "In fact, it has put me ahead in my preparations for London. I'm looking forward to my next race."

His next race is on June 9 in New York. Bolt, meanwhile, will race on May 31 at a Diamond League meet in Rome.

Finishing second on Wednesday was another Jamaican, Michael Frater in 10.05. Keston Bledman of Trinidad and Tobago finished third in 10.06.

Meanwhile, reigning Olympic champion Dayron Robles of Cuba will join Blake at the Adidas Grand Prix meet on June 9 in New York and will compete in the 110-meter hurdles.

The race will be the first performance in New York for the world record-holder.

This is shaping up to be a formidable competition, too, as the 25-year-old Robles steps up to the line against Americans Jason Richardson, David Oliver and Aries Merritt.

It could very well provide a glimpse of what's in store in London. Although, Liu Xiang of China won't be competing up in New York. Liu set the meet-record of 12.92 seconds in 2007, a mark that could be in jeopardy given this talent-rich field.
