Disgraced duo defies court order

FORMER Greek sprinters Kostas Kenteris and Katerina Thanou defied an order to appear in court yesterday in their trial for alleged false statements to authorities in a 2004 Athens Olympics doping scandal.

Kenteris's lawyer said that his client was abroad due to a "family issue", while no reason was given for the absence of Thanou.

Despite the development, the Athens court said the trial will continue as normal.

The court, which opened the trial last month, had ordered the pair to appear before magistrates in connection with their claims of having been involved in a motorcycle accident on August 12, 2004.

The sprinters were accused of staging the crash on the eve of the Games to avoid a doping test.

The trial has dragged on for years due to frequent postponements. Proceedings have already been halted once due to the absence of witnesses and a request from the accused of new witnesses.

Kenteris, the 200-meter gold medalist at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and 100 silver medalist Thanou were acquitted of doping charges in a Greek athletics federation probe in 2005.
