Former Champions Gay And Powell Set For Shanghai Showdown

AMERICAN Tyson Gay and Jamaican Asafa Powell will duel in the 100 meters at the Shanghai Golden Grand Prix on Sunday.

The duo were roped in after Olympic and world champion Usain Bolt pulled out of the meet, citing fatigue. Bolt, the record holder, did not compete in the 100 meters at the World Athletics in Greece this week.

World silver medalist Gay beat former world record holder Powell in the 100 meters in Greece on Saturday. Gay, the second fastest man ever behind Bolt, edged Powell on the line to win by two-hundredths of a second in 9.88 seconds.

Bolt is ranked No. 1 in IAAF ranking, followed by Gay. Powell is world No. 4.

Shanghai will also see the return of Athens Olympic champion and local heartthrob Liu Xiang - his first race after pulling out with injury at the Beijing Olympics last year.

Other big names to start in Shanghai are Russian pole vault diva Yelena Isinbayeva, Olympic champion Veronica Campbell-Brown of Jamaica (100m), American world champion Allyson Felix (200m), and Jeremy Wariner of the US in men's 400m.
