Honeymoon Isle Not Up To Scratch For Heidler

HAMMER throw world record holder Betty Heidler has checked out of Germany's training camp for the world championships in Daegu, complaining of bad conditions on the honeymoon resort island of Jeju.

The 27-year-old reigning European champion, who broke the women's world record in May with a 79.42 meters throw, is a hot favorite to reclaim the world title which she won in Osaka in 2007.

"We looked at the training facilities for hammer throwers and I was unfortunately negatively surprised," she said. "We were told they were supposed to be great but this is not the case," she said, adding weights had to be carried into the open-air parking lot from the gym for her to be able to drop them on a hard, stable surface as part of her training regime. "To make matters worse it then started to rain. The hammer throw facility itself is at a nearby pitch which is not bad but half of the cage has collapsed from the wind while the ground is uneven."
