Hurdler Liu Xiang set to defend crown
CHINESE hurdler Liu Xiang is about to defend his Diamond League crown at home as the 2012 Samsung Diamond League Shanghai is scheduled on May 19.
Including Liu, seven top athletes have confirmed their participation in the annual tournament, the local organizer said at a press conference this afternoon.
The Shanghai Stadium will see Liu up against his old rival, American hurdling athlete David Oliver who lost last year's tournament to Liu, and the emerging talent Jason Richardson from the United States who won the 2011 IAAF World Championships and currently ranks No.1 in men's hurdles.
Away from the hurdles, big names will include Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, last year's men's 100m winner in Shanghai, as well as the world's two fastest women sprinters – Veronica Campbell from Jamaica and Carmelita Jeter from the US. They are joined in the field events by Andreas Thorkildsen, the 2004 and 2008 Olympic champion javelin thrower who is aiming for gold rather than last year's silver medal in Shanghai.
The athletes will compete in 16 disciplines, including nine Men's – 100m, 800m, 5,000m, 110m hurdles, pole vault, triple jump, shot put and javelin throw – and seven Women's – 220m, 400m, 1,500m, 3,000m, steeplechase, high jump, long jump and discus throw.
The Shanghai stop of the Diamond League should also be an important warm-up for the coming London Olympics this summer.
Ticket prices are expected to remain in the same range as last year's 60 yuan to 1,380 yuan. The tickets should be available from April 9.
