Injured Liu Xiang quits World Challenge

CHINESE former Olympic and world champion hurdler Liu Xiang intends to quit the 2010 athletic World Challenge meeting in Zagreb Croatia in September because of his Achilles heel injury, local media said today.

Although the surgery on Liu's right heel was more than 18 months ago, there was still some inflammation around the injury, which kept Liu from higher intensity training, said his coach Sun Haiping.

To let Liu better recover from the injury, Liu's team is likely to quit the 2010 IAAF World Challenge in Zagreb, which means his only race left this year would be the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.

"Unless he feels totally no problem with the foot or in a really good condition, going to the meeting is meaningless," Sun told reporters. "If he does not get a good result, it would be another hit to his confidence."

Sun said rehabilitation and recovery would be Liu's first priority this season and, if all goes well, his next competition would be the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou.

Liu flew to the United States during the World Cup period to have his foot checked and rehabilitation training. The result of the check was good, according to Liu and Sun.
