Isinbayeva makes a winning return
RUSSIAN pole vaulting great Yelena Isinbayeva was victorious on her return to action at the Russian winter indoor meet on Sunday after an 11-month hiatus from competition.
Isinbayeva, who announced her departure from the sport after finishing fourth at the Doha World Indoor Championships in March, cleared 4.81 meters to beat compatriots Svetlana Feofanova, the European champion, and Alexandra Kiryashova, who both jumped 4.56.
Feofanova claimed silver because of fewer failures at lesser heights. Polish world champion Anna Rogowska managed 4.46 to finish fifth.
Elsewhere, veteran sprinter Kim Collins won the 60m, and world indoor champion Ivan Ukhov won the high jump with a leap of 2.34.
Isinbayeva attempted 4.91, 15cm short of the world record she set in Zurich in 2009, but didn't get close on any of her three attempts.
"Everything came off today," Isinbayeva said. "The aim was to win and it's everything we planned. It's great and I'm happy my return worked out."
Isinbayeva has set 27 world records, but never in Russia.
Isinbayeva vowed to continue her pursuit of setting records.
"World records aren't just in my plans, they simply have to happen," Isinbayeva said.
She insisted her "colossal training" makes another record inevitable.
The 28-year-old won all the major competitions between the 2004 Athens Olympics and the Berlin world championships in August, where she failed to clear a height.
Then at the world indoors in March in Qatar, she left without a medal, prompting her to take a break that she said was needed due to the excessive pressure of competition.
Isinbayeva has said she plans to compete at next year's Olympics in London.
In the men's 60m, Collins, of St. Kitts & Nevis, was pipped by young American sprinter Joshua Norman. Preliminary results showed they clocked the same time, 6.60, but Norman was disqualified and Collins, in his last professional season, moved up to first place.
Ukhov won the high jump from compatriot and European champion Alexander Shustov, who cleared 2.31, and American Jesse Williams, who matched Shustov with his season's best.
