Kipchoge defends London Marathon title, sets record
ELIUD Kipchoge defended his London Marathon title by running only 8 seconds slower than the world record and setting a course record on a chilly morning.
The 31-year-old Kenyan completed the 42.2-kilometer route in front of Buckingham Palace in 2 hours, 3 minutes, 5 seconds. The world record of 2:02:57 was set by Dennis Kimetto in 2014. Stanley Biwott was 46 seconds behind Kipchoge, while Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopia was third. Jemima Sumgong won the women’s race for the first time after overcoming a fall with around 6km remaining. The 31-year-old Kenyan won in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 58 seconds, with defending champion Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia five seconds be-hind, and Florence Kiplagat third.
