Liu, Bolt confirm for Shanghai Diamond League
CHINESE Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang and Jamaican 100m sprint world champion Usain Bolt have confirmed their participation in the 2010 IAAF Diamond League Shanghai next month, the league announced this afternoon.
To prepare for the competition in Shanghai, Liu has decided not to take part in the first stop of the league in Doha, Qatar on May 14, he said at today's launching ceremony.
"The contest in Doha is too soon for me to compete and now I will concentrate on the competition in Shanghai," Liu said.
Liu also said that his Achilles heel injury was not a big deal and he would take part in the 2010 Osaka Grand Prix on May 8 as a warm-up race for Shanghai.
"His condition is better," said Liu's coach, Sun Haiping. "The ache in his right heel is getting less and less but there is still some pain."
Sun said he had been increasing the intensity in Liu's training after the 13th IAAF World Indoor Championships in Doha last month to let him get back in good shape for the coming event.
Upgraded from the previous Golden Grand Prix, the Diamond League is a series of world-class track and field meets, which will award a four-karat diamond ring worth US$80,000 to athletes who have won the highest scores in each discipline at the end of the season, on top of regular game fees and bonuses.
Only the top 20 ranked athletes are entitled to this event, including all Olympic champions, world champions and world record holders. The league is crucial to each athlete as the top three of each meet will be awarded double scores, which will directly impact their year-end world ranking.
The Shanghai meet, the second stop of 14 around the world, will be held in Shanghai Stadium on May 23. Shanghai and Doha are the only two stops in Asia.
Tickets are available through the official Website www.dlsh.org.
