Liu wins silver of 110m hurdles as Robles disqualified
SHANGHAI'S Liu Xiang today won the 110m hurdles world silver in Daegu, South Korea, when Olympic champion Dayron Robles was sensationally stripped of his title after crossing the line in first place.
America's Jason Richardson won the gold medal.
Robles won a thrilling race in 13.14sec, edging out Richardson by just 0.02sec but the Cuban appeared to make contact with the left arm of China's Liu Xiang coming off the final hurdle.
"Robles has been disqualified by the track referee under rule 163.2 for obstruction on the track," an IAAF official told AFP.
She later confirmed that Richardson was the winner, stating that an appeal from Cuba to have the disqualification overturned had been rejected.
Liu, the 2004 Olympic champion and former world record holder, who timed 13.27sec, was promoted to silver from bronze with Britain's Andy Turner taking bronze in a time of 13.44sec.
Earlier, when asked about the physical contact he had made with 2007 world champion Liu coming off the final hurdle, Robles had played down the incident, saying: "That's normal in hurdles. I feel great."
The race had been billed as a showdown between the three fastest sprint hurdlers of all time, Robles, Liu and David Oliver -- but Oliver was never in contention, finishing fourth in a photofinish with Turner following Robles' disqualification.
