Nike backs Salazar in doping row
American sportswear giant Nike yesterday reiterated its leading coach Alberto Salazar鈥檚 refutation of doping allegations made in a BBC documentary.
鈥淲e take the allegations very seriously as Nike does not condone the use of performance-enhancing drugs in any manner,鈥 Nike said in a statement. 鈥淏oth Alberto and Galen (Rupp) have made their perspectives clear and fully refute the allegations made against them.鈥
The documentary, broadcast on Wednesday, alleged that Salazar, 56, had encouraged athletes including America鈥檚 Olympic 10,000 meters silver medallist Galen Rupp to use illegal substances. Both Salazar, who runs Nike鈥檚 Oregon Project training center, and Rupp strongly deny all allegations of wrongdoing and none of the athletes from the project has ever failed a drug test.
Salazar also coaches British double Olympic champion Mo Farah, and European 10,000m champion Jo Pavey has told Farah, her Great Britain teammate, that she would drop Salazar if she was in his position.
鈥淎s an athlete, you don鈥檛 want to associate yourself with people that have got accusations and allegations against them,鈥 Pavey said.
鈥淚鈥檓 not here to accuse anyone, but if there was anybody I was slightly associated with that I suddenly realized had these accusations against them 鈥 or any of my training partners 鈥 I鈥檇 run a mile.鈥
