Oliver runs fastest 110 hurdles in 2 years

OLYMPIC bronze medallist David Oliver ran the fastest 110 meters hurdles in two years with a time of 12.93 seconds at the US championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Sunday.

"A couple of hundredths off the world record," a pleased Oliver told reporters after his lifetime best. Only six men have run faster, including Cuban Dayron Robles, whose 2008 world record stands at 12.87 seconds.

Oliver now has four of the year's top five times, including a May victory over Olympic champion Robles in Daegu, South Korea. He said he worried about the way he ran, not the competition.

"My competitors are the 10 hurdles," said Oliver, who missed the 2009 world championships with a strained calf muscle. "Always has been. You start worrying about other people, that's when mishaps happen."

Ryan Wilson finished second in 13.17 seconds with Ronnie Ash two-hundredths of a second behind. Olympic silver medallist David Payne was fourth in 13.28.

World mark

Jenn Suhr added another world-leading mark with a second attempt clearance at 4.89 meters in the women's pole vault. The Olympic silver medallist, the former Jenn Stuczynski, then missed three times in a bid to become only the second woman to clear 5.00 meters.

Russian world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva has exceeded the mark six times, including her best of 5.06 meters. Suhr, who is coming back from injuries, said the victory was probably the most meaningful of her multiple US championships.

World 200 meters bronze medallist Wallace Spearmon spoiled Walter Dix's bid for a sprint double, running a wind-assisted 19.77 seconds.

Dix, the Beijing Olympics double bronze medallist who won the 100 meters on Friday, finished a well-beaten second in 20.14 seconds.

Both the men's and women's 200 were without the US best. Former world champion Tyson Gay and Olympic medallist Shawn Crawford missed the championships and three-time world winner Allyson Felix won the 100 on Friday.

World champions Dwight Phillips leaped 8.37 meters, the year's second-best long jump, and Christian Cantwell 21.65m to defeat fellow Olympians Reese Hoffa and Adam Nelson in the shot put.
