Rudisha breaks 800 world mark

KENYAN David Rudisha smashed the men's 800 meters world record yesterday, clocking a time of one minute 41.09 seconds at the ISTAF athletics meeting in the German capital.

His time shaved two hundredths of a second off the previous best mark of 1:41.11 set by Denmark's Kenyan-born Wilson Kipketer in August 1997 in Cologne, Germany.

The 21-year-old, world junior champion in the same distance in 2006, was led through the first 400 meters by pacesetter Sammy Tangui in 48.65 seconds. Rudisha was a semifinalist in the 800 at last year's world championships.

Earlier, Caster Semenya cruised to victory in the women's 800 at the same stadium where she won the world title one year ago - and then missed 11 months of competition while undergoing gender tests.

The South African teenager surged ahead in the last 50 meters and crossed the line in 1:59.90, breaking the 2-minute barrier in her third race since returning to competition in July. It was the first time Semenya went under 2 minutes since she was cleared to run again. Semenya hopes to make the South Africa team for the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, in October.
