Runner disqualified

A RUSSIAN marathon runner has been disqualified and faces further sanctions after winning a race in Japan at a time when the country is under suspension from global track and field.

Viktor Ugarov won the Kanazawa marathon on Sunday, two days after Russia was provisionally suspended by the IAAF over doping. The IAAF said yesterday that “the event organizer is disqualifying his record and no appearance or prize money will be paid.” The IAAF said it would write to the Russian federation seeking action against Ugarov.
