Runners, sports stars flock to scenic Qingpu half-marathon

ON March 13, Qingpu District hosted a half-marathon road race that attracted more than 3,000 runners and a constellation of celebrity athletes.
The event was organized by 550 Dream Run, as part of its 550 Country Run series, and sponsored by real estate developer China State Construction Dongfu Group. Like other events organized around the country by 550 Dream Run, the race route took participants past some of the area’s most beautiful scenic areas. For those who did not want to cover the full half-marathon distance, a 6-kilometer “fun run” was also offered.
Among other luminaries on hand for the race were Olympic-medalists Li Ning and Tao Lunan, as well as table-tennis world champion Wang Liqin. Li, who took three Olympic gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, handed out awards to the race’s winners.
Another of the day’s headliners was Luo Qin, a winner at the 2014 Voice of China competition, who sang at the event.
Winners in the half-marathon race were divided into three groups by age. Among those born in the 1950s and 1960s, Liu Qingxiu from Shanghai and Xu Hongwei from Zhejiang Province were the fastest man and woman, respectively.
Yang Shuai and Ye Miaoling were the fastest male and female runners among participants born in the 1970s and 80s. Both are from Shanghai.
Cao Shaobo from Zhejiang Province and Hu Enhui from Anhui Province placed top among those born in the 1990s.
Officials from the Qingpu Sports Bureau and Zhujiajiao Town also took part in planning and supporting the race.
The goal of organizer 550 Dream Run is to hold 100 races in scenic areas across China over a period of 10 years, and involve more than 1 million racers. Five such events have been held in Shanghai’s Chongming County, and Qingpu and Jinshan districts since 2014.
