Russian team walks the walk
THE Chinese and Russian teams took the honors on the first day of the 2014 IAAF World Race Walking Cup that kicked off in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, yesterday. The Russians won two races while the hosts grabbed one gold medal.
China’s Gao Wenkui won the junior men’s 10-kilometer race in a new event-record of 39.40 minutes. Gao took the lead at the start and never relinquished it despite pressure from Japan’s Daisuke Matsunaga, who took silver, finishing five seconds behind Gao.
Earlier, Russians finished 1-2 in the senior men’s 50K race, with Mikhail Ryzhov dominating in 3 hours, 39 minutes, and 5 seconds. Ivan Noskov was 33 seconds behind him.
The Russian team also won the women’s 20K race in the evening. Anisya Kirdyapkina grabbed the second gold for her country while Chinese walker Liu Hong settled for silver.
Today, London Olympic champion Chen Ding is the favorite in the senior men’s 20K race. Although Chen hasn’t participated in many races since the Games, he said he has still maintained good physical condition. “If I win, I will consider playing guitar on the podium,” Chen joked.
