Shanghai Sports Bureau awards Liu Xiang honor title

LIU Xiang, China's best-known athlete in men's 110-meter hurdle, has got a new title: the deputy secretary of the Communist Youth League of Shanghai Sports Bureau, officials said yesterday.

But unlike his other title as a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, the nation's top political advisory body, his new role does not require his active duty, nor pays him any salary, according to Li Yuyi, the bureau director.

Li said Liu is still a professional athlete, not government official. His new title is more an honor than an actual position.

"It has been a tradition of the bureau's Communist Youth League," Li said. "All the League's committee members are the best athletes of the city."

Besides Liu Xiang, diver Huo Liang and Wu Minxia and swimmer Liu Zige were all named committee members in June. Liu Zige is also the deputy secretary of the committee.

Liu Xiang has been training hard for next year's London Olympics, which could be his last attempt for a second gold medal. He dropped out of the 2008 Beijing Olympics due to his foot injury.
