Smiling Liu back home
China’s former 110-meter Olympic and world champion Liu Xiang returned home yesterday after a 10-month rehabilitation in the United States.
His recovery from a ruptured Achilles tendon surgery has been going well in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the watchful eyes of Tim Grover, who has also worked with National Basketball Association legend Michael Jordan and current player Kobe Bryant.
“I’m coming back after almost a year. I feel a bit ‘out of place’ in Shanghai, but also a bit excited,” a smiling Liu told reporters on his arrival at Pudong International Airport.
According to an earlier report, Liu will be in Shanghai for two weeks to get an extension for his US visa. He will return to the US again for another one or two months of rehabilitation.
Liu’s coach Sun Haiping was at the airport to receive his ward yesterday. Sun is heading to northeast China’s Liaoning Province for the ongoing National Games with another Chinese hurdler Xie Wenjun, while Liu’s US recovery team will be in charge of his training in Shanghai during the two-week stay.
Liu crashed out of both London and Beijing Olympic Games, due to Achilles tendon woes. China’s only track Olympic gold medalist had surgery in London last August and then went to the US for rehab. The 30-year-old is expected to return to competitive racing next year if his recovery goes well.
