Track hero returns home after London surgery

CHINESE star hurdler Liu Xiang arrived at the Pudong International Airport this morning after a 10-hour flight from London.

He was greeted by many fans who had waited there for some time to catch a glimpse of their hero.

Liu received a surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon in his right foot at the Wellington hospital in London last Thursday and was hospitalized for four days.

But the former world record holder did not go home directly. Instead, he went to his training base in Xinzhuang, Minhang District for further treatment and rehabilitation, his parents told the media.

Sun Haiping, Liu's coach, said Liu is recovering well from the surgery and will go through systematic rehabilitation in Shanghai.

Liu, the 2004 Olympic champion, crashed out of the first heat of the 110-meter hurdles at the London Games last Tuesday to the disbelief of many Chinese fans who still regretted his sudden dropout from the Beijing Olympics due to the same foot injury.
